Explore Buffalo Grove and its Amenities for a Weekend or a Lifetime
In the 1800s, Buffalo Grove was a farming community whose harvests were traded in nearby Chicago, some 30 miles away. This rural community continued to grow in size and industry, as did its neighboring communities. In the 1930s, it welcomed the first concrete road in Northern Illinois, which gave Buffalo Grove an advantage in terms of vehicular access. Shortly after that, a gentleman named Al Frank embarked upon building larger ranch-style homes in what used to be farmland. The village wasn’t incorporated until 1958.
Tradition tells the village owes its name to buffalos roaming the land when the French, Pottawatomi, and English lived there and saw buffalo resting and drinking by a nearby creek. The area was well-known as a farming community, and the reputation of its dairy products in particular and the Widner Cheese Factory played a pivotal role in the community. Although residential development became Buffalo Grove’s primary engine of growth, it was followed by industrial growth, including the Buffalo Grove Commerce Center. Industrial parks continued to grow well into the 1990s, as did grocery stores and other retail outlets. As time went on, farm families were incentivized to sell their lands to developers, creating even more housing opportunities for the growing population.
Today, Buffalo Grove is no longer a farming community. Instead, it offers much of what one would expect in a burgeoning community. There are plenty of swimming pools, golf courses, and public parks for its residents to enjoy, along with numerous public schools. Its location gives it access to several essential transportation arteries, including Metra, which connects the village to Chicago via rail. It is known as one of the best places to live in the nation, based on the cost of living, employment, crime, and schools.
As far as entertainment goes, Buffalo Grove is privileged in its location. Naturally, proximity to Chicago implies access to world-class entertainment, but there is more than that to this beautiful village. Some other locations within close proximity include-
- Six Flags Great America- ideal for thrill-seekers
- LEGOLAND Discovery Center – great for families and children of all ages
- Northwestern University- its beautiful campus allows for exploration even if you’re not a student
